Save Your Money By Being Your Own Handyman

Working as a team on home improvements is a blast. Make it into a weekend project and work together to get the job done. Consider all the savings you'll make by doing it by yourself. The advice in this piece will help you determine your project and collect everything you need to begin.

If your bed doesn't come with a headboard, or you didn't purchase it with one, you can easily solve your problem. Use an old weathered wooden gate or a lovely iron gate to make a one of a kind headboard. That's something you won't see anywhere else and will not be sold in stores.

A great way to add ambience to a room is by lighting a candle. Candles are a romantic gesture in any setting, but also give off a warm glow providing a room with the feeling of warmth and coziness. If your candle is scented, it also gives off a nice scent in the room while making you feel relaxed.

Use carpet samples to carpet a whole room! Retail stores often throw away their samples. Cut each sample up into smaller pieces and tack or glue them into place for free floor covering. Cut them in identically sized pieces for a tile effect or cut them in irregular geometric shapes for an abstract look.

Don't toss out dirty bedroom doors. Remove doors from their frames and sand them until you can see bare wood. Pick up oil-based paint and apply with a roller. For a brand new feel, opt to change your doorknobs to a fancier design.

A simple way to improve your bathroom is by repainting it. Always use a satin/eggshell or semi-gloss paint, as this is more mold resistant than a flat paint, and can also be wiped down more easily. When choosing a color, take into account the size of the bathroom. If it is very small, then opt for a light color. If the ceiling is of low or average height, then consider painting it a shade lighter than the walls. This will create the illusion that the ceiling is higher.

Hang your pickle jars up by their necks! Well, really by their lids. Jars you would normally discard make great storage containers. To organize them tack the lids in a line under your shelves or cupboards. Fill the jars and screw them in place to make see through storage for small items like screws, pencils, pens, whatever!
Be careful of Lead containing paint
If you are planning a home improvement project that involves turning off the water or removing plumbing fixtures, make alternate arrangements in case things get held up. For example, you don't want your family being stuck without a sink or toilet over the weekend, if the delivery of the new one gets held up.

You should have a plan and be able to do it the right way. It might be a lot of hard work, but when you work with someone else, it'll be even more fun to see the results. You will feel good when you realize how much money you have saved.
